Building The Key Skills Collection

Turn Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing into race‑ready skills your swimmers can execute under pressure.

Every coach has seen it:

  • Beautiful strokes in warm‑up.

  • Decent strokes in easy drill sets.

  • Then… as soon as swimmers have to go fast under pressure, everything falls apart.

On paper, your swimmers “have” the skills.

In races, Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing don’t show up when it matters most.

The Building The Key Skills Collection is about fixing that specific problem.

It gives you:

  • 3 focused manuals on the big three race skills

  • ~225 example sets that train those skills in real workouts

  • 1 short video explanation for every set

  • Plus in‑depth skill videos for Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing

So you’re not just teaching skills – you’re training swimmers to hold these skills at race speeds, under race fatigue, in race situations.

Big promise: Show you exactly how to build Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing with practical workouts and video breakdowns – so swimmers can learn skills that actually help them swim fast when it counts.

Who This Is For

The Building The Key Skills Collection is for coaches who:

  • Already believe skills matter but struggle to make them hold up in races

  • Want concrete progressions for the big three skills, not just random drills

  • Work with developing or competitive swimmers (age group to senior)

  • Want to apply constraints effectively and with purpose

If you’ve ever thought, “We’ve worked on this in practice 100 times – why doesn’t it show up in races?”, this is built for you.

If you’re just looking for a few fun drills and aren’t interested in building skills that hold up under pressure, this is not for you.

The Problem: Skills Don’t Show Up In Races

Most swimmers can “do it right”:

  • When they’re fresh

  • At slow speeds

  • In drill sets with no pressure

The problem is:

  • Their propulsion isn’t trained to hold at race speeds

  • Their alignment breaks the moment they try to go fast

  • Their timing isn’t synced to the demands of racing

You’re left with:

  • Pretty drills

  • Ugly races

  • Just enough progress to know it could work, but not enough to trust it

The skills aren’t trained to the point where you or your swimmers can rely on them when medals or cuts are on the line.

You don’t need more cues or another drill video.

You need a way to train Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing as real performance skills.

The Solution: A Focused, Practical System For The Big Three Skills

The Building The Key Skills Collection shows you how to:

  • Define what each skill actually means for how your swimmers create speed

  • Spot the most important problems in your swimmers

  • Use the tools you already have (stroke counts, drills, resistance, stroke rates, training aids, hand postures) to build those skills

  • And pressure‑test them with workouts that prepare them for races

Instead of “Let’s work on timing a bit today,” you get:

  • Clear definitions and priorities for Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing

  • How to progress these skills over time

  • Exact sets you can run tomorrow – with a short video explaining why they’re built that way and how to adapt them

What You Get Inside

1. Three Key Skills Manuals (PDF)

Volumes:

  • Building The Key Skills, Vol 1 – Propulsion

  • Building The Key Skills, Vol 2 – Alignment

  • Building The Key Skills, Vol 3 – Timing

Each volume includes:

  • A clear breakdown of what the targeted skill is and how it shows up in your swimmers

  • Common problems and how they show up in stroke mechanics

  • How to use the tools from the Strategies series (stroke counts, drills, resistance, stroke rates, training aids, hand postures) specifically to build that skill

You’ll know exactly what you’re trying to improve and how it connects to performance.

2. ~225 Example Sets – With 1 Video Per Set

Across the three manuals you get roughly 225 example sets that show every different way you can train each key skill across:

  • All four strokes and underwater kicking

  • Different types of training (skill, speed, race-pace, endurance)

For every set, you get:

  • The written set itself

  • A short ~90‑second video walkthrough (mp4 + YouTube) where I explain:

    • Why it’s designed the way it is

    • What problem it solves

    • The role that specific approach plays in developing that key skill

Coaches can:

  • Copy sets directly into practice, or

  • Use them as templates and tweak distances / setup while keeping the same idea – using the video explanations as a guide.

You’re never left with “nice idea, but what do I actually write?” You’ll see how to turn each concept into real work.

3. In‑Depth Skill Videos (mp4 + YouTube)

On top of the per‑set videos, for each key skill (Propulsion, Alignment, Timing) you also get in‑depth skill videos where I show:

  • What “good” looks like in the water

  • The underlying principles as to why these skills are so important

You get both the big picture of each skill and the nuts and bolts of how to train it.

How This Fits Your Existing Training

You do NOT have to throw out your program to use this.

You can:

  • Add 1–2 Propulsion, Alignment, or Timing sets each week

  • Build short “skill blocks” before or inside main sets

  • Focus on one key skill for a block, then rotate

As an example, you might:

  • Spend 4-6 weeks emphasizing Alignment (using 2-3 sets from the collection each week),

  • Then shift focus to Propulsion while maintaining what you’ve built,

  • Then sharpen Timing as you move closer to key meets.

The manuals and videos give you practical sets you can implement today, and show you how to progress them over time.

Because every set comes with a video explaining the “why” and how to adapt it, you can scale it:

  • Up for senior groups who can handle more volume and intensity

  • Down for younger swimmers who need shorter distances or simpler constraints

You can use these volumes:

  • On their own to sharpen race skills, or

  • Alongside the Skill Development Strategies Collection to turn your whole program into a skill system

Why This Is Different From More “Technique Tips”

Focused on the principles of speed. Each volume is about one of the foundational princples for speed – Propulsion, Alignment, or Timing – not a grab bag of problems.

Integrated with your tools. You learn how to use the same tools (counts, drills, resistance, stroke rates, training aids, hand postures) to build these three skills deliberately.

Practical, not theoretical. You get conceptual understanding and concrete workouts and visual demos – including 1 short video per set and in‑depth skill videos.

FAQ

Q: How much time will this take to implement?

You can start with a single set. Many coaches begin by:

  • Adding one Propulsion, Alignment, or Timing set 2–3 times per week, or

  • Swapping an existing “technique” set for one from the collection and watching what happens.

You do not have to “finish” the manuals or videos before using the content.

Q: Do I need the Skill Development Strategies Collection first?

No. You can use the Key Skills Collection on its own to:

  • Clarify what Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing really are

  • Train those skills with the example sets and videos

If you also own the Strategies Collection, you’ll have a deeper library of ways to use each tool – but it’s not required to get value from Key Skills.

Q: Does this work in yards and meters? Short course and long course?

Yes. The examples are written in standard swim set language. Many of the sets use 25s, because most programs train in 25‑yard/meter pools and 25s are ideal for small blocks of focused skill work.

It’s straightforward to adjust any set for 50‑meter pools or different distances. I don’t prescribe exact intervals, because those vary widely by age and ability; instead, I show you how to think about the intensity and rest so you can set appropriate intervals for your group.

Q: How is this different from your book / Stroke Fundamentals / Strategies?

  • Stroke Fundamentals and my book focus on what creates speed and the fundamentals of skills (with specific drills).

  • The Skill Development Strategies Collection focuses on how to use the tools (stroke counts, drills, resistance, etc.) in daily practice.

  • The Building The Key Skills Collection focuses on using those tools to build Propulsion, Alignment, and Timing specifically, with targeted sets and videos.

They stack together. Fundamentals tell you what matters. Strategies show you how to use tools. Key Skills shows you how to use those tools systematically to improve the skills that matter most.

Q: I’ve already bought the Propulsion volume. Am I double-paying?

No. During launch, you’ll get a private upgrade link so your total cost for all three volumes ends up lower per volume than someone buying the bundle today.

Q: Do I need to change my entire program to use this?

No. This is designed to plug into your existing training. You can:

  • Start with one key skill (e.g., Alignment)

  • Add 1–2 sets per week

  • Expand as you see the impact

  • Use what you like, leave what you don’t

Q: Is this for age group or senior swimmers?

Both. The sets and videos include notes on how to adjust for:

  • Younger swimmers (simpler distances, more rest, simpler constraints)

  • Older swimmers (more volume, tighter intervals, more complex constraints)

The tools and principles are the same. Only the way you apply them changes, and I show you how.

Q: Do I have to work on all three skills at once?

No. Most coaches start by focusing on one key skill (often Propulsion or Alignment), add 1–2 sets per week, and expand as they see the impact. You can roll this out gradually instead of changing everything at once.
